Filing Professional Complaints

Filing Professional Complaints

Leaves

Sometimes you might run into unethical practice issues related to your Independent Medical Examinations or from other practitioners.

You are allowed to complain about the treatment you receive and each regulating college is set up to receive complaints.

Problems I had with IME assessors/Other professionals

One professional IME assessor showed my medical records to individuals not linked with my case during the assessment

I sent a complaint letter to the relevant regulating college

Outcome: Assessor was disciplined

One assessor tried to upset me right before my assessment began by bringing up a serious life trauma and then leaving the room

I sent a complaint letter to relevant regulating college

Psychologist was given a series of suggestions by OPA to improve their practice

Case taken further as I felt my complaint was not adequately resolved

Outcome: Recommendations were provided from the highest group overseeing psychological practice complaints

A nurse gave me injectable medication without my consent immediately following my accident

Sent a complaint letter to the head of the Emergency room who contacted me and said she would speak with that nurse. I also sent a letter to the College of Nurses of Ontario. CNO gave me two choices: to give then the complaint and they would deal with it without my involvement, or I could choose a process where I would be very involved in the investigation. I chose the former.

Outcome: CNO aware and have dealt with the situation.
